Quikrete Concrete Stain For Your Garage Floor

There's no question that Quikrete is the most popular brand among garage floor coatings. This may be due to their good reputation, or the catchy name, but I don't think anyone even comes close. If you consider this, then it makes a lot of sense for Quikrete Concrete Stain to be seen by many as the best possible garage floor stain available.

Which Quikrete Concrete Stain Should You Use?

There is no product called "Quikrete Concrete Stain", per se. This can cause some confusion because, if one searches for Quikrete Concrete Stain, they may get one of two different results: Quikrete Etching Stain, and Quikrete Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain. These two different products will give you very different looks, so be careful that you know which one you actually want. For now, we'll concentrate on Quikrete Etching Stain. I'll probably give my take on the Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain a bit later. Hey, stop complaining, I'll get to it eventually. And also, eat your vegetables.

According To Quikrete, Etching Stain Is The Best Solution For Your Garage

Quikrete is pretty specific in their recommendation to use only etching stain when it comes to your garage, and there is sound reasoning behind that. To etch concrete, the surface of your concrete garage floor is actually kind of melted using acid, and then lines are scraped in to give texture while, using this product, a stain of your choice of color is also added. Not only will the garage flooring end up with a nice, old world, classic look, but it will also provide more traction.

OMIGAH! Etching Sounds Complicated!

Etching concrete is not difficult. Actually, Quikrete says that their etching stain is a one-coat application. They also make it very clear that a sealant must be used, though, so that pretty much kills the one coat idea. Still, the complete install is much easier than epoxy garage floor paint and, after you apply the sealant, there will be some protection, which stain alone can't claim. Also, don't forget that you will need to thoroughly clean the garage floors and, if your floor has oil or grease stains, you'll want to use a stain remover. One coat, huh?

Staining Is Cheaper Than An Epoxy Garage Floor Coating, Right?

Usually, but not in this case. My guess would be that it's due to the acids needed for the etching process, but a can of Quikrete Etching Stain will likely run you over $300, and that's without cleaner or sealant. That's pretty darn expensive, even moreso than some of the higher quality garage floor tiles. However, garage floor tile won't make your concrete look like marble. Is it worth it? That depends entirely on you. If protecting your concrete is your top priority, I would say no, although once sealed, there is some protection. If your main goal is to make your concrete look different than any of the other garage floor finishes, though, then this will certainly do it.
