It's good that you've made the decision to make your sleeping a more enjoyable experience and invest in luxury bedding, yet if you have no idea what is even in luxury bedding sets, you're going to end up disappointed. The complicate things further, the terms that surround luxury bed linens are one of the many things that those who know think that everyone else does, too. Well, we're going to change that. Following is a quick and dirty rundown of all the various luxury bedding terms you're likely to encounter.

Luxury Bed Sheets

Every bed in a bag type set will come with bed sheets of some sort. Your average luxury bedding sets are no exception, and will generally include at least a fitted sheet. Beyond that, though, it will depend on the rest of the set. There may also be luxury bed sheets included, or there may be a duvet instead, which is intended to replace both the comforter and the sheets. Look carefully at the contents of any discount luxury bedding set that you're considering. Leaving sheets out but adding a duvet is the norm, but leaving sheets out when there's only a comforter will leave you spending more money on sheets.

Explaining The Duvet

The duvet, a common luxury bed linen, is a term that's thrown around a lot without an equal amount of explanation. Suffice to say, in modern luxury bed sets, that the duvet is meant to be the luxury bedding alternative to both a comforter and sheets. This is one of the many reasons why the number of "pieces" in a luxury bedding sets isn't terribly important. Be sure to pay attention to the actual contents. A duvet will generally take up only as much space as a comforter, so expect luxury bedding sets with duvets to be a bit smaller and lighter than others. Unless, of course, there are more extras.

Pillows

Luxury bedding sets will vary greatly when it comes to pillow covers. Often, you will see pillow covers referred to as shams, or even pillow cases. They're all the same thing. Most luxury bedding sets generally have as many normal pillow covers as are appropriate for the size of the bed that the luxury bed linens are supposed to cover. In addition, they'll often have a rather arbitrary number of coverings for other random cushions, such as throw pillows and neck pillows. If you can match the contents to your actual cushions, then that's great, but don't count on it.

Extras

Unlike standard bedding sets, you can expect luxury bedding ensembles to include a bed skirt. The exception to this is luxury bedding sets with duvets in them. This is because the duvet is meant to be covered, and they figure you'll get a bed skirt that matches your duvet cover. If the luxury bedding set that you're looking at includes a duvet cover, then it should include a skirt as well. This is actually more common in discount luxury bedding sets. In the more expensive sets, they expect that you'll buy the bedding for the quality of the luxurious bedding, and the duvet cover and skirt to match the decor of your home.
